The Library-cum-Documentation Centre of the National Centre for Children’s Literature (NCCL) is one of the most specialized libraries with facility of research, reference and lending for professionals working in the field of children’s literature. It is one-of-its-kind Children’s libraries in the country. The Library-cum-Documentation Centre is well connected with all the organizations, institutions, NGOs active in the field of promotion of children’s literature across India. The library is connected with the database of 9,400 libraries through DELNET in India and abroad.

AESTHETICS OF THE LIBRARY

The library has been specially designed and given an artistic look by depicting Panchtantra tales. The animated colourful picture wall at the activity-cum-display corner attracts the visitors. The blue clouds structured at the ceiling can motivate one put on one’s imaginative cap! The shelves have been designed so as to accommodate and exhibit the children’s literature of all foreign and Indian languages in an aesthetic manner based on the genre/age-group/language classification of the same. The installation of wooden tree allows children to leaf their thoughts on its branches. The rainbow-coloured welcome desk invites all booklovers to its book treasure.

CLASSIFICATION AND CONTENT OF THE LIBRARY

The Library-cum-Documentation Centre of the National Centre for Children’s Literature has been developed with a strong focus on children’s literature and the needs of the creative community associated with it. The library primarily houses resources related to children’s books and materials, ensuring comprehensive support for authors, scholars, illustrators, publishers and all those engaged in the promotion of children’s reading culture.

At present, the library has an impressive collection of over 24,000 books in 43 Indian languages and 33 foreign languages. The books are systematically classified under subjects such as Picture Books, Short Stories, Poetry, Drama, Fiction, Comics, Folk Literature, Biography, etc. The collection also includes resources related to children’s holistic growth and development, covering their emotional, social, intellectual and creative needs.

To introduce young readers to India’s rich cultural and literary heritage, the library also houses the four Vedas - Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda - along with several Puranas. These have been provided to make children aware of the ancient texts of India.

Further, the library maintains around 600 reference resources including children’s encyclopedias, dictionaries and atlases. It also has a collection of Braille books to facilitate access for children with visual impairments. The library subscribes to more than 15 popular children’s magazines to promote and sustain the habit of reading among young readers.

MEMBERSHIP

  1. The library is open for everyone who is interested in Children’s Literature.
  2. Persons seeking membership may collect the requisite form available at the circulation counter/website and submit the same duly filled along with two Passport size photographs, residence & identity proof.
  3. Lifetime membership to the NCCL library requires just a one-time registration fee of Rs. 100. A refundable security deposit of Rs. 500/- is also to be deposited.
  4. Address, Active Mail ID, Mobile numbers must be legible. Otherwise the forms will not be accepted.
  5. Membership is open to persons residing in the Delhi and NCR (Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Noida only). Postal membership is not available.
  6. Membership enrolment is done Monday to Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.
  7. It is mandatory to inform the NCCL Library regarding any change in address and Mobile number.

TEMPORARY MEMBERSHIP

  1. Temporary membership is provided free of charge to outstation experts, research scholars, and ex-servicemen for a period of 15 days.
  2. However, books will not be issued to temporary members.
  3. For availing temporary membership, a valid ID proof and a passport-sized photograph are mandatory.

LIBRARY HOURS

OPENING HOURS: 10:00 A.M. TO 05:00 P.M. (MONDAY TO FRIDAY)

  • The Library will remain closed on all gazetted holidays notified by the Government of India.
  • The Library will also remain closed every year during the New Delhi World Book Fair.
  • All users must prepare to leave the Library five minutes before closing time and be out of the building by closing time.
  • Items available for loan may be borrowed until ten minutes before closing time.
