National Centre for Children's Literature

 

NCCL is a wing of the National Book Trust, India. It was established in 1993 to promote, create, coordinate, monitor and aid the publication of children’s literature in Indian languages. This centre helps in the creation and translation of useful books for children. The primary objective of this centre is to collect and make available joyful Indian and foreign materials and expertise to publishers, authors, illustrators, translators and others interested in the rapid and balanced development of children’s literature available to parents, teachers, educationists and planners. It involves public and private agencies for the purpose on regular basis. It also provides assistance and expertise to teachers, librarians, editors, writers and illustrators by arranging creative workshops across the country, especially in rural areas for promoting reading habits among children.

NCCL also organizes workshops, discussions, seminars and exhibitions for children, teachers, parents and professionals to explore new avenues in children's literature and creative skills in children and participates in International book fairs to promote Indian children’s literature abroad.

Readers' Club Movement

NCCL runs the Readers' Club Movement to promote the habit of reading among children. This Movement is considered to be one of the largest reading movements and approx 1,28,000 Readers' Clubs have been established in the country. Readers’ Club is an activity centre based on reading books and making reading and teaching more interesting in schools, non-formal education centres, libraries and education centres run by NGOs.

NCCL organizes training/orientation for teachers/facilitators to provide practical knowledge regarding setting up and running of a Readers’ Club, selection of books and activities to be conducted without much expenditure in schools/education centres. Renowned writers and experts on activities are invited as resource persons in such training/orientation programmes. Workshops on creative writing or interesting activities for children or members of Readers’ clubs are also organised from time to time. Besides, the centre arranges subject experts for organizing different activities such as workshops on writing and publishing, storytelling, illustration, etc. on request for the promotion of children’s literature.

 

Readers’ Club Bulletin

A bilingual quarterly children’s magazine Readers’ Club Bulletin is also published by NCCL to foster the Readers’ Club Movement. Children and teachers are also encouraged to contribute to it. Copies of the Readers’ Club Bulletin are available on NBT website for free download. E-copies of the Bulletin are sent free of cost to Readers’ Clubs and stakeholders in the field of Children’s Literature including Authors, Illustrators, Publishers, Librarians and Members of NCCL Library also.
